    My name is Kylie Heiner and I teach 10th grade World History and 11th Grade American History. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences and my Master’s Degree in Education from Ashford University. I am highly qualified in Arizona in History. I have been in Arizona for the better part of ten years, but I am originally from the south (Alabama mainly).  I have most recently taught at Desert Hills High School but have worked with several schools throughout the valley. In my free time I enjoy reading, listening to music, and watching football. I got my love of history from my dad. This is my first year at LFPA and I am very excited to work with the students and staff.

    Biography:

    I am a transplant from California enjoying my tune at LFPA since the 2012-13 school year. In 2001, I graduated from the California State University at Northridge and I am an Arizona Highly Qualified Math Teacher.  I am also a Professional Photographer and in the past, I have enjoyed being a Vocal and Theatre Director for four years of 1st through 6th graders in California.  In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my four children, two grandchildren, exploring unique places Arizona, and attending theatrical productions. I am very excited about working at LFPA. I believe every student has the ability to learn and I hope I can instill within students the importance of always striving for their personal best.

    Biography:

    I am very excited to be at LFPA’s Gilbert Campus for the 2013-2014 school year. I graduated from Arizona State University with my Bachelor of Arts in History in 2010. After graduating from ASU, I moved to Boston where I have spent the last few years earning my Master in Education at Boston College, working, and enjoying the history of Boston. During my time at ASU and BC, I had the wonderful opportunity to live in Italy and England. While in Europe I was able to gain a deeper understanding of history, cultures, and people. These places and their history came alive for me and became a true passion in my life. Now, I am very happy to be back in Arizona, my home, and to work with the LFPA family!

    Biography:

    I was born in Cleveland, Ohio and spent my childhood and young adult years attending school and enjoying time with my family and friends.  I received my undergraduate degree from John Carroll University in Communications.  After graduation, I began working in radio for two local Cleveland radio stations, 98.5 WNCX Cleveland’s Classic Rock and 92.3 Xtreme Radio as a Marketing Coordinator and On-Air Talent.  Deciding to change careers, I moved away from my family in the Midwest, and pursued a teaching career in Tucson, Arizona.  I became Arizona Highly Qualified and spent five years teaching high school English at a small charter school in Tucson.  In my free time I enjoy sports, attending local sporting events, traveling to new cities and places, taking my dog Micah to the dog park, hiking, reading, or enjoying a good movie.  I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to teach Health and Life Skills and Fitness courses to Learning Foundation and Performing Arts’ students in Gilbert.  After five years in Tucson getting my feet wet, I am excited to spend time in the Valley with my new family of students!

    Biography:

    My name is Jan Schmidgall.  I am very excited to be at LFPA’s Gilbert campus for the 2014-2015 school year.  I will be teaching 7th grade history this year.  This is my 33rd year of teaching.  I tried retirement but it was not for me and I am back to my passion, history!  I graduated from Arizona State University with my degree in education.  I received my Master’s degree in Educational Curriculum and Planning from Northern Arizona University.  I am highly qualified in Arizona to teach history.  In my spare time I love traveling and snow skiing.  I especially love traveling to places that have historical meaning.  I believe history can come alive for the students and I strive to inspire them to dig deeper and find the “back story” on all of the people and places we discuss.  I love to see my students discover connections between the past and their lives today.  I believe we are lifelong learners and I encourage my students to find the value in learning something new each day.

    Biography:

    I am originally from Minnesota, but I moved to Arizona as a teenager.  I graduated with a degree in Business Management from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  Before becoming a math teacher, I spent 6 years in the residential construction business.  This experience has enabled me to integrate the mathematics learned in the classroom, like geometric shapes and financial calculations, with real world applications.  In fact, I recently completed Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University course so I can help students and adults think critically and make wise financial decisions.  This is my second year at LFPA and I am a Highly Qualified Math Teacher.    In the classroom I strive to develop lifelong learners with a dedicated personal integrity and strong work ethic.

    On my free time, I enjoy to playing my guitar, hunting, hiking, fishing, skiing, wakeboarding, exercising, traveling, and working on carpentry/real estate projects.

      Biography:

      Ms Rachel Siegler started taking dance lessons at the age of three and taught her first class at the age of 14.  Ms. Siegler was blessed enough to learn many different disciplines in dance and travel the country as a child dancing and performing.  She was educated in ballet, tap, jazz, broadway, hip hop and kickline.  In high school she was privileged to add contemporary and African Caribbean to her repertoire while studying under incredible dance professionals. She continued her education with dance masters at the University of Minnesota and the University of Utah, which eventually brought her to Arizona. While living in Arizona for the past 14 years she has taught at numerous studios, after school programs, charter schools, and churches. Ms. Siegler has owned her own dance studio in Laveen, Arizona and a very successful dance store in Mesa. Additionally, she has had the opportunity to mentor new teachers, is currently licensed to teach Zumba, and is the dance leader at her church.  She enjoys spending all of her free time with her beautiful 10 year old daughter and their 3 crazy dogs.

      Biography:

      Randall L. Thorn comes to Arizona from Indiana, Pennsylvania just north and east of Pittsburgh, with 22 years experience of teaching the performing arts Currently, he is the Choral Musical Theatre, and Drama Director at Learning Foundations and Performing Arts Charter School in Gilbert. He has worked part time at the theatre department of Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he did musical direction and lighting design. Mr. Thorn is an Arizona Highly Qualified Teacher and a 1992 graduate in music education and theatre from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and also earned a MA from Penn State in Theatre. He has directed over 80 musical productions in his career including West Side Story, Hairspray, Bye Bye Birdie, Beauty and the Beast, Shrek, The Wizard of Oz, and The Little Mermaid to name a few. He has worked with students of all ages and has directed elementary, middle school and high school choirs, hosted district, and regional choir events and has guest conducted choral festivals in Pennsylvania . He was a founding member of the Footlight Players Theatre for Youth summer camp at IUP and is a vocal coach focusing on the musical theatre style for students. Randall is also a professional lighting designer and has created lighting plots for numerous Phoenix productions such as The Phoenix Girls Chorus and Just Breathe and Tap On, as well as the IUP Opera, Blairsville High School, Kittanning High School and Ford City High School.

      Biography:

      I have been teaching guitar and keyboard classes at LFPA since 2007.  I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Arizona State University with a Bachelor Degree in Music Performance.  I am an active performer of jazz and classical music, and also perform various rock, folk, and ethnic music genres.  It’s been a wonderful and rewarding experience teaching at LFPA.  I really enjoy teaching students a skill that helps them think creatively and provides them with a means of self-expression.

      Biography:

      Mrs. Willis began teaching ceramics from her own studio in March of 2005 and shortly after began teaching LFPA students ceramics as an elective class. The classes teach the basic techniques of working with clay. The whole concept of painting your own ceramic pottery is great, “we always have fun” says Mrs. Willis!  Students learn how to make all kinds of different shapes and textures, and best of all you don’t have to be an artist.
